About this service

URGENT TREATMENT CENTRE (UTC)

An urgent treatment centre* is appropriate for urgent but not life-threatening conditions requiring same day care

*Urgent Treatment Centres were previously called Walk-in Centres (WICs) or Minor Injury Units (MIUs) depending on their original purpose

OPENING HOURS

UTCs are open 8.00am to 8.00pm, 7 days a week

WALK-INS

You can generally walk into a UTC without an appointment, however some centres advise you to ring 111 before setting off so that 111 can book a direct appointment at the UTC for you, however they should not refuse you if you do attend without an appointment

What conditions does this service deal with?

UTCs deal with urgent but not life-threatening conditions requiring same day care. Examples are shown below

  • Allergic reactions
  • Bites and stings (animal, insect, human)
  • Broken bones
  • Bumps and bruises
  • Burns and scalds (minor)
  • Chest infections
  • Cuts, wounds and gashes
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Ear infections
  • Emergency contraception
  • Eye injuries (minor) and problems, e.g., foreign bodies
  • Fever or high temperature
  • Headaches
  • Head injuries (minor, without loss of consciousness)
  • Road traffic accidents
  • Rashes
  • Sprains and strains
  • Stomach pain
  • Throat infections
  • Skin infections
  • Urine infections
  • Wound infections
